Why is LED lighting sustainable?

As you may have heard: LED lighting is much more sustainable than traditional lighting. It's even the most sustainable lighting on the market today. What makes LED lighting so sustainable? There are several reasons for this. In this blog we explain what is meant by sustainability. We also explain why LED is more sustainable than traditional lighting.  






 



What is sustainability?

Sustainability is a very broad concept. It's about ensuring that people, nature and the economy are in balance with each other. A company that operates sustainably therefore takes into account the impact of activities on people and nature. The use of LED lighting can contribute to a better environment. Below we explain why this is.
 

Low energy consumption LED

LED lighting consumes far less energy than traditional lighting. The energy consumption is much lower because only a very small part of the energy is converted into heat. Most of the energy, 95%, is converted into light. With an incandescent lamp, a very large part of the energy is converted into heat. As a result, an incandescent lamp consumes an unnecessarily large amount of energy. A LED lamp can therefore produce as much light as a incandescent or halogen lamp with only a small part of the electricity. 
 

Long life span LED

LED lighting has a much longer life span than traditional lighting. A longer life span means lower CO2 emissions. Because LED lighting does not become hot, the risk of burning out is much smaller than with an incandescent lamp. Also, LED can better withstand shocks and vibrations. LED lighting can last up to 50,000 hours. An incandescent lamp will last up to 1000 hours and a halogen lamp 3500. So there are big differences. 
 

LED lighting does not contain any toxic substances

Traditional lighting contains harmful substances such as mercury. Mercury is harmful to people's health and when these lamps are discarded also to the environment. LED lamps do not contain mercury. LED lamps are electronic chips. No harmful substances are needed for this. Because LED does not contain these substances, LED lighting is recyclable. 90% of the materials of a LED lamp can be reused. In addition, LED lighting does not emit harmful radiation, such as UV and infrared.
