Purpl plug cables have different kind of names, namely male and female. The reason behind this has to due with the pins and housing. With ordinary male plugs, the contact pins are not protected, while with Wieland the pins are shielded by the outer jacket of the plug. The regular female plug has a jacket shielded by a round outer jacket, just like Purpl, but looks like a contact pin and is therefore a male plug.
